Tips for Mature Drivers

To many maturing drivers, the ability to drive a vehicle equals independence.  With the average life
expectancy of Americans increasing, many individuals keep driving well into their golden years.

These tips will help drivers keep safe on the road for years to come.

  1. Consider the safety features of a vehicle.  Many new vehicles come with lane departure warning system, blind spot indicators, and front collision alerts.
  2. Select a vehicle which fits you well.  When taking a vehicle for a test drive, pay attention to how easy it is for you to enter and exit the vehicle.  Spend time adjusting the mirrors and seats to make sure you can sit comfortably and have good visibility.  Make sure that you can easily operate any dials or buttons.
  3. Your vision is important.  Be sure to have regular eye exams and to wear corrective lenses if necessary.  If you struggle with glare from headlights, consider limiting your driving to daylight hours.
  4. Plan your route ahead of time.  If you are uncomfortable making left-hand turns or driving on busy roads, plan your route to avoid those things.  Consider using a navigation system.
  5. Know your limitations.  If you find yourself getting lost in areas which used to be familiar, it may be time to consider asking others to drive you.  If you have a series of accidents or near misses, it may be time to give up driving.
